Interpolation approximations for queues in series

چکیده

Tandem queues constitute a fundamental structure of queueing networks. However, exact queue times in tandem queues are notoriously difficult to compute except for some special cases. Several approximation schemes that are based on mathematical assumptions that enable approximate analyses of tandem queues have been reported in the literature. This article proposes an approximation approach that is based on observed properties of the behavior of tandem queues: the intrinsic gap and intrinsic ratio. The approach exploits the nearly linear and heavy-traffic properties of the intrinsic ratio, which appear to hold in realistic production situations. The proposed approach outperforms existing approximation methods across a broad range of examined cases. It is also demonstrated that the proposed approach has the potential when applied to historical data to achieve accurate mean queue time estimates in practical production environments.

Analysis of a two-layered network with correlated queues by means of the power-series algorithm

We consider an extension of the classical machine-repair model, also known as the computer-terminal model or time-sharing model. As opposed to the classical model, we assume that the machines, apart from receiving service from the repairman, supply service themselves to queues of products. The extended model can be viewed as a two-layered queueing network, of which the first layer consists of t...

Interpolation Approximations for the Mean Waiting Time in a Multi-server Queue

This paper gives numerical validation of a couple of interpolation approximations for the mean waiting time in a Cl/C/s queue, which are provided by a unified approach similar to that in Kimura (1991). Both approximations are represented as certain combinations of the mean waiting times for the Cl/M/5 and Cl / D / 5 queues in which the arrival processes and the mean service times are the same a...

Analysis of High-order Approximations by Spectral Interpolation Applied to One- and Two-dimensional Finite Element Method

The implementation of high-order (spectral) approximations associated with FEM is an approach to overcome the difficulties encountered in the numerical analysis of complex problems. This paper proposes the use of the spectral finite element method, originally developed for computational fluid dynamics problems, to achieve improved solutions for these types of problems. Here, the interpolation n...

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Bending of Straight Beams Using hp-Spectral Approximations

Displacement finite element models of various beam theories have been developed using traditional finite element interpolations (i.e., Hermite cubic or equi-spaced Lagrange functions). Various finite element models of beams differ from each other in the choice of the interpolation functions used for the transverse deflection w, total rotation φ and/or shear strain γxz, or in the integral form u...

An Interpolation Approximation for the GI/G/1 Queue Based on Multipoint Padé Approximation

The performance evaluation of many complex manufacturing, communication and computer systems has been made possible by modeling them as queueing systems. Many approximations used in queueing theory have been drawn from the behavior of queues in light and heavy tra c conditions. In this paper, we propose a new approximation technique, which combines the light and heavy tra c characteristics. Thi...
